SSI vs. SSDI Payment Dates: What's the Difference?
Two different programs, two different calendars. Here's exactly when each one pays.
Two programs, two schedules
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are often confused, but they're separate programs with separate payment calendars:

The SSDI Wednesday schedule
If your SSDI benefits started in May 1997 or later, your payment Wednesday depends on your date of birth:
- Born on the 1st–10th → 2nd Wednesday of each month
- Born on the 11th–20th → 3rd Wednesday
- Born on the 21st–31st → 4th Wednesday
If your benefits started before May 1997, you're paid on the3rd of every month regardless of your birthday.
What if I receive both SSI and SSDI?
Receiving both benefits — a concurrent benefit — is common when your SSDI amount is low. In that case, your payment schedule changes:
- Your SSI payment arrives on the 1st of the month.
- Your SSDI payment arrives on the 3rd of the month — not on the birthday Wednesday.
So concurrent beneficiaries get two payments a few days apart at the start of each month.
Weekends and holidays shift both schedules
Neither program pays on weekends or federal holidays. When a payment date falls on one, the money is sent on the closest preceding business day:
- If the 1st is a Saturday, SSI arrives on the last business day of the previous month.
- If the 3rd is a Sunday, the pre-1997/concurrent payment arrives on the preceding Friday.
- Wednesday payments only move when a federal holiday lands on that Wednesday, which is rare.

Frequently asked questions
Are SSI and SSDI paid on the same day?
Usually not. SSI is paid on the 1st of the month, while SSDI follows the Wednesday schedule based on your birth date (2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday). If you receive both benefits, SSI arrives on the 1st and your SSDI arrives on the 3rd of the month.
Can I receive both SSI and SSDI at the same time?

Why did my SSI payment arrive at the end of the previous month?
