What Happens When Your Payment Date Falls on a Weekend or Holiday?

The rule: payments move backward, not forward
Social Security and SSI payments settle through the banking system, which doesn't operate on weekends or federal holidays. Instead of making you wait, the SSA issues the payment on the closest preceding business day. Your money never arrives late because of a weekend or holiday — it arrives early.

The SSI "double payment" effect
SSI is paid on the 1st of the month, and the 1st lands on a weekend several times a year. When it does, the payment moves into the previous month. For example, if June 1 is a Sunday, the June SSI payment arrives on Friday, May 30 — so May shows two SSI deposits and June shows none.
This is the single most common cause of "where is my SSI payment?" confusion. Nothing is missing: you always receive 12 payments per year, just not always one per calendar month.
